Select an air conditioner with the proper heat removal capacity by consulting experts before purchase. Properly understand your requirements and opt for calculated heating and cooling or only cooling air conditioners. An oversized appliance reduces operating efficiency.
- For good results, install the air conditioner at the centre of the room at not more than 2 metres from the floor level (consult experts before installation).
- Shade the room from direct sunlight. Plant trees and bushes to keep the sun away from your house where possible.
- Close drapes and curtains to keep the sun’s rays away.
- The room to be air-conditioned should be properly insulated and sealed (around doors, windows etc).
- Avoid opening the door frequently and overcrowding the room.
- Users can save up to 3–5% of the energy for each degree the air conditioner is set above 22 ℃. Hence set the thermostat of a room air conditioner at 25–26℃ to provide the most comfort at the least cost.
- Clean the air filter regularly (avoid dusting the room with the air conditioner on). A dirty air filter reduces airflow and consumes more electrical energy.
- Get the air conditioner serviced regularly by an authorised person.
- Use the ceiling fan intermittently to spread cooling evenly when it’s not too hot. Using ceiling or room fans allows you to set the thermostat higher because the air movement will cool the room.
- If the air conditioner is older and needs repair, it’s likely to be very inefficient.
