Your home gets a tech upgrade
Home security is of utmost importance for homeowners, with technology playing a key role in improving safety.
Home safety today is about more than just physical protection; it’s about creating peace of mind and a sense of sanctuary. Shyam Motwani, business head, locks and architectural solutions, Godrej Enterprises Group (GEG), says, “As urban lifestyles evolve and smart living becomes more common, homeowners are looking for solutions that are not only safe but also intelligent and seamlessly integrate into their daily lives. Safety begins at the door. It’s the fi rst line of defence and the foundation of trust in any living space. A secure entryway sets the tone for the entire home, offering protection and reassurance.” Effective home safety is built on three essential pillars. First, robust physical infrastructure, doors, windows, and access points must be equipped with durable locking systems and architectural hardware that resist tampering and forced entry. These elements form the backbone of a safe home. Second, intelligent access control, smart locking solutions that provide remote access, real-time alerts, and customisable user permissions. Third, layered deterrence with data protection, a comprehensive setup that includes smart systems designed to deter threats while protecting user data. Lt Commander Aparajit Shankar (retd), AVP operations, Soteria Command Centre, says, “Homeownership today is incomplete without a robust approach to home safety, and technology is rapidly transforming how residents protect what matters most. Global and Indian trends clearly show that smart security is no longer a luxury add-on but a foundational element of the modern home.”
Home safety is key Worldwide, the smart home security market is projected to grow from roughly USD 35 billion in 2024 to well over USD 140 billion by the early 2030s, underlining how safety is now central to residential investment decisions. Owners are not just buying square feet; they are buying peace of mind through intelligent locks, video doorbells, intrusion detection and integrated emergency response. “In India, the home security systems market has crossed USD 1.8 billion in 2024 and is expected to more than double over the next decade, driven by urbanisation, nuclear families, and rising awareness of safety. This shift is visible in new-age projects where CCTV, access control, visitor management, SOS alarms and fi re integration are now part of the basic specifi cation rather than premium extras,” says Shankar. Tech driving smarter protection Globally, smart cameras, connected sensors and AI-based analytics are emerging as the backbone of residential protection, with smart cameras holding the largest device share and smart locks growingfastest.
Cloud connectivity and mobile apps allow homeowners to monitor doors, perimeters and common areas in real time, receive intelligent alerts and even trigger automation remotely. In India, the acceleration is powered by affordable broadband, 4G/5G, and DIY-friendly devices such as video doorbells, wireless cameras and app-based panels. IoT-based systems now integrate with voice assistants and home automation, enabling visitor verifi cation, package protection and maintenance alerts from anywhere in the world. Tech plus guards A notable Indian trend is the move from purely guard-driven security to a blended ‘tech plus manpower’ model. Guard teams are increasingly supported by command centres that use integrated video, access logs and AI-based incident dashboards to improve response quality and reduce blind spots. According to a Tata Power spokesperson, “With rising cases of theft and break-ins across Indian cities, home automation has moved from being a lifestyle upgrade to an essential layer of home security. The modern household increasingly needs systems that offer continuous oversight, especially as families spend more time away from home due to work and travel. Today’s smart home solutions address this shift through a blend of real-time visibility, intelligent deterrence, and emergency responsiveness.”
As cities grow denser and lifestylesbecome more mobile, such automated safety ecosystems are becoming a natural extension of home security, offering reassurance even when residents are miles away. A robust smart home ecosystem typically rests on three core pillars that balance security, convenience, and sustainability. These elements are central to how homeowners experience automation. Security and safety as the fi rst line of defence Smart sensors, alarms, and panic buttons ensure real-time response to emergencies. Features like control logs enhance accountability by showing exactly who accessed or controlled devices, adding digital transparency to physical safety.
Convenience and unifi ed control With one app managing everything from fans to heavy appliances and seamless voice integration with virtual assistant technology, automation simplifi es daily routines. Retrofi ttable modules also allow homeowners to upgrade without rewiring, making smart living accessible even in older residences. Energy management Real-time electricity usage insights empower residents to monitor consumption, set automated schedules, and turn off appliances remotely. In a country where energy optimisation is becoming both a household priority and a national goal, this capability stands out as a meaningful advantage. These three layers together make home automation not just a techupgrade but a foundational part of modern living. Why Gen Z is particularly drawn to smart homes? Gen Z is now entering the homebuying and renting ecosystem and is going to shape the next wave of demand in India’s smart living market.
A digital-first mindset For Gen Z, intuitive connectivity isn’t optional, it’s the baseline. App-based and voice-led appliance control mirrors the speed and simplicity they expect from every digital service. Sustainable priorities This is India’s most climate-conscious generation. They gravitate toward technology that enables measurable impact. With energy insights, scheduling, and remote control, many home automation platforms let users actively reduce electricity consumption and adopt responsible living practices. Mood lighting, preset scenes, and automated routines resonate with Gen Z’s preference for environments that adapt to them, not the other way around. Whether it’s a work-from-home setup, a fitness routine, or a movie night, they value the ability to tailor their home through a tap or voice command. In many ways, Gen Z is turning smart homes into the new standard of aspirational living, prioritising comfort, responsibility, and seamless digital interaction.
