Abodes that work
Wth evolving work patterns, entrepreneurs, freelancers, and hybrid employees are spending more time working from home, either fully or partially. As a result, creating an effective workspace within the abode has become essential. Here is how you can go about the process with ease.
THE ESSENTIALS
Designing a home office begins with identifying the right location for it. Seema Puri Mullan, principal architect and founding partner, SEZA architects, advises, “The chosen area should be somewhat secluded from the more active parts of the home, and can be subtly separated through a partition, level changes, or material shifts that define but do not isolate it. Natural light and good ventilation are the most important, ideally paired with a view of greenery. In larger homes, a separate entry can minimise disturbance to residents, while in compact homes, visual and spatial cues can create a clear mental boundary between work and home. Additionally, flexibility is key as work patterns continue to evolve. The space may needto accommodate multiple users or adapt to new technologies over time without major reconfiguration.” Mullan also adds that furniture should prioritise comfort and efficiency. For instance, a compact desk with adequate storage, task lighting, and an ergonomic chair with good back support is important. Design can also significantly influence well-being. Vaishali Shah, design lead-home storage, Interio by Godrej, says, “A thoughtfully designed workspace can improve focus, energy levels, and reduce fatigue. Elements like indoor plants, natural light and warm materials create a sense of calm, while nature-inspired patterns, breathable textures, and finishes help restore mental balance and the connection tonature.” Visual clarity is also integral. Kunal Sharma, founder and CEO, Flipspaces, says, “Height-adjustable desks and integrated storage systems enhance efficiency without adding clutter.” Combining natural and task lighting will further reduce eye strain.
TECHNOLOGY AND FINER DETAILS
Technology integration is another critical but often overlooked aspect. Sammeer Pakvasa, MD and CEO, Eleganz Interiors, says, “Poor cable management, insufficient charging points, and weak connectivity can disrupt workflow. Planning these details early will ensure a seamless experience. A clean, organised setup, supported by built-in or modular storage, will help maintain focus.” Personalisation, meanwhile, should be restrained. “A single artwork, a few carefully curated objects, a different colour or texture and a subtle scent can add character without creating visual clutter,” notes Mullan.
CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS
Designing a home office comes with certain challenges, though, particularly in smaller homes. Speaking on some of them, Aditya Yamsanwar, director, TOA, says, “Space constraints often lead to work zones merging with living areas. Modular furniture, foldable setups, and adaptive designs can help spaces transition easily between functions.” Follow these tips to craft the ideal home office that nurtures productivity and comfort.
