An Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) is a high-tech combination of equipment and controls that handles, stores, and retrieves inventory with precision and speed. Think of it as the "central nervous system" of a modern warehouse, where software replaces manual labour to move goods.
How ASRS Functions in a Warehouse
The system functions through a seamless integration of four primary components:
- Storage Structure: High-density racking systems that often reach much higher than traditional shelving, sometimes serving as the actual building frame (Clad-Rack).
- The S/R Machine (Storage/Retrieval): This is typically a Stacker Crane or a Shuttle. It moves vertically and horizontally along aisles to deposit or pick up loads.
- The Conveyor Interface: A "pick-up and deposit" (P&D) station where the ASRS interacts with the rest of the warehouse, moving goods to shipping docks or picking stations.
- WCS/WMS Software: The Warehouse Control System (WMS) tells the ASRS exactly where a pallet is located.
