A regular door closer (also known as a standard arm door closer) is a mechanical device mounted on the pull side of a door. It is designed to automatically and securely close the door after it has been opened, preventing slamming and ensuring the door latches properly.
How It Works
The operation relies on a balance of spring tension and hydraulic fluid:
- Opening (Storing Energy)
When you push or pull the door open, the arm turns a pinion gear inside the closer body. This gear moves a piston that compresses a heavy-duty internal spring, storing potential energy.
- Closing (Releasing Energy)
Once you let go, the spring wants to return to its original shape. It pushes the piston back, which rotates the gear and arm to pull the door shut.
- The Hydraulic "Check"
To prevent the door from slamming, the closer body is filled with hydraulic oil. As the piston moves, the oil is forced through small, adjustable valves. By restricting how fast the oil flows, the device "dampens" the speed, ensuring a smooth, controlled motion.
