The system operates through a combination of mechanical energy and hydraulic regulation:

• Energy Storage: When you push the door open, an internal heavy-duty spring (housed in a cylinder) compresses, storing the mechanical energy used to open it.
• Controlled Release: Once the door is released, the spring pushes back to its original length. To prevent the door from slamming, the device uses hydraulic damping.
• Hydraulic Regulation: As the door closes, hydraulic fluid is forced through small internal channels. By adjusting the sweep and latch valves, you can fine-tune exactly how fast the door moves through its arc and how firmly it clicks into the frame.

Concealed door closers cannot be installed on all types of doors due to specific structural and design limitations.
These closers work best on hollow-core or solid wooden doors with sufficient thickness (35-45 mm) and edge space for drilling and recessing the chain or cylinder mechanism near the hinges. They suit inward-swinging internal doors.
Avoid installation on metal, glass, fire-rated, or outward-swinging doors, as they lack the required mortising depth, may interfere with seals or hardware, and risk compromising safety certifications. Thin or lightweight doors also fail to provide adequate support for tension and alignment.

The primary difference between a concealed door closer and a surface-mounted door closer is in their visibility and installation method. While both serve the same functional purpose of automatically closing a door, they cater to different aesthetic and practical priorities.

• Concealed Door Closer: They are designed for a minimalist look. The closer body is hidden inside the door or the door frame, making it invisible when the door is shut. This is the preferred choice for high-end luxury homes, hotels, and modern office spaces.
• Surface-Mounted Door Closer: They are fully visible, usually consisting of a boxy hydraulic body and an arm assembly bolted to the face of the door and the frame. They come in various finishes (silver, gold, black) and are more utilitarian in appearance.

• Concealed: Installation is more complex and usually requires a professional. It involves mortising (cutting a pocket) into the door leaf or frame. 
• Surface-Mounted: They are simply screwed onto the surface, making them the standard choice for retrofitting existing doors or for DIY projects.

3. Durability and Security

• Concealed: Because the mechanism is tucked away, it is protected from dust, weather, and tampering. This makes them more "vandal-proof" in public areas like schools or malls.
• Surface-Mounted: The exposed arms are more susceptible to physical damage or accidental impacts in high-traffic corridors.
